Calcata stands out like a vision on a tufa limestone plateau overlooking the valley below. The settlement has never required the addition of outer walls, and it looks suspended at the top of the rock formation. A single-arched portal provides access to this ancient village. Abandoned in the 1930s due to the fear of landslides, Calcata was later repopulated in the second half of the 20th century by a colony of artists to whom it owes its current vitality.
